This year, we want to offer you a fresh way to walk through Advent—by engaging Scripture together. We’ve created four simple plans, each one centered on a different passage that reflects the four themes of Advent: hope, peace, joy, love. Each plan lasts four days, giving you space to linger slowly with God in His Word. You can move through all four plans over the season, or simply choose the ones that meet you where you are right now. Accompanying each plan is a word-for-word Scripture song written by a Verses artist as a melodic anchor.

Advent Meditation: Hope

This five-day plan will walk you through the book of Lamentations by reading a short passage every day. Each day is accompanied by a short video that explains what you're reading and how it's all about Jesus. In this plan, you'll discover the relentless hope found in God’s unending mercy and learn that you can trust in God's faithfulness even through the depths of despair and suffering.

Lamentation is a collection of five separate despairing poems written by the Prophet Jeremiah about the destruction of the once proud Jerusalem in 586 BC. Although Jeremiah laments for the desolation, he understands that this is a consequence of the sins of people. But amidst such sorrow and hopelessness, Jeremiah reminds the readers, “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases and his mercies never come to an end.”

Jeremiah was an unlikely prophet—young and inexperienced. Yet God chose him to deliver an unpopular message to a rebellious people, warning them of coming devastation and calling them to repent. Despite fierce opposition, Jeremiah lived with integrity and faith. He proclaimed God’s message with compassion and tears, communicating God’s faithful love and sovereign justice and the promise of a future when God would once again restore his people.

The Book of Lamentations

When life feels dark—like nothing is going right and nothing ever will—it’s easy to feel lost and hopeless. But just like the sun, moon, and stars light up the darkest sky, God’s light shines in our lives even in the hardest moments because God’s presence carries us, no matter what we face. For the next 28 days, we’ll explore how God meets us in our pain and brings light to guide us through. We’ll learn that even when we lose hope, God is closer than we know.

Even Still

Most likely written by the prophet Jeremiah, Lamentations is a collection of poems mourning the siege of Jerusalem and the coming exile of Judah. Despite the wickedness of God’s people that led to their captivity, the writer reminds his readers the loyal love and mercy of the Lord are truly new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23). Even in deep darkness, God is our portion, our hope, and our salvation.
