Held Together: A Mental Health Journey for Adults and Young People | Lent Devotional 2026

DAY 1 OF 47

Day 1 (Ash Wednesday) – Wonder Before Worth

Scripture: Psalm 139:14–16

Reflection/Devotion

Have you ever thought about how God has spent nine months working within your mother to create you? Or have you considered the miracle of our consciousness - how we are able to think and feel and have imagination and dream?

In this passage, the Psalmist talks about being created by God and also being known by God. God knows us because God created us. And that relationship is ongoing. God, who formed us, is still at work, re-creating us and shaping us. This psalm beckons us into that intimate connection with God, to be spiritually formed by the One who knows us and and shaped our very bones.

Science reveals the beauty of how God has woven us together as well. When we look at how complex and beautiful the human body is, we get a small glimpse into how creative and loving our God is. The complexity and interconnectivity of our body, mind, and spirit can remind us of God‘s goodness and grace. So today, as you begin this journey of Lent, take some time to think about and consider how beautiful God’s creation is in you, who are fearfully and wonderfully made

Spiritual Practice

Walk slowly around outside for a few minutes or gaze at something in nature (even if it’s just a picture) Name three small things you notice that inspire wonder, gratitude, or delight.

Afterwards, repeat aloud: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Closing Prayer

“Breath of God, widen my seeing.”
