Seek First Lent: A Bible-Reading Plan to Draw Closer to Jesus This LentSample

As we begin Lent, and many Christians are prayerfully engaging in a form of fasting, you may be asking, “What exactly is biblical fasting all about?” Scripture is filled with accounts of individuals and communities seeking the Lord through fasting. It’s more than simply denying yourself food or abstaining from certain things; it’s a spiritual discipline of self-denial. Fasting reveals to us our weaknesses and our need for God. In this state, we find ourselves more open to hear God’s voice and most willing to align our life with His will.
Reflection:
- What do verses 13-14 reveal about the purpose behind fasting?
- What does this passage reveal to you about God’s character?
- What hope did God’s people have as they fasted?
Pray and Apply:
Pray and ask the Lord if there is some form of fasting He is calling you to during Lent. If the Holy Spirit leads you to fast during this Lent season, ask the Lord to use the fast to help you draw closer to Him. Thank God for being gracious and compassionate to you (as stated in verse 13), and ask Him to reveal more of Himself to you during this season.
